What's Going on at the National Children's Museum January 2010

Check out the fun stuff going on at the National Children's Museum this month. I will be taking the Mischiefmakers to some events this month!

Wee Wonders' Hawaiian Vacation TUESDAY, 10 - 11:15 A.M.

Escape the chilly weather and explore the tropical paradise of Hawaii. Learn about the islands' plants, animals, and culture alongside your young child in this fun, fast-paced program. Activities typically include stories, games, art, music, experiments, drama, and movement.

For ages 2-3 with a parent/caregiver. Limit two children per adult; all non-infant children with an adult must pay and must participate; additional siblings are not permitted. Fee is $10 per child. Pre-registration and advance payment (by check or credit card only) is required by the Friday prior to the event. Please call 202.675.4120 or email RSVP@ncm.museum to register.

Chinese New Year SATURDAY, 11 A.M. - 4 P.M.

Celebrate the Chinese New Year with a variety of festive activities. Illuminate a cold winter day by making a Chinese paper lantern and learn about animals and symbols in the Chinese zodiac.

Program presented by NCM’s partner, New Horizons. The New Horizons Arts Education and Cultural Enrichment Program at Children's National Medical Center brings the cultural arts and animal visitations to over 10,000 patients annually.

MLK Day of Service, Catnip Creations MONDAY, 11 A.M. - 2 P.M.

Kids aren’t the only ones who like to play. Pets need toys, too! Make a difference by creating colorful and fun catnip toys to be donated to a local animal shelter. The Launch Zone will also donate bedding materials to shelter animals, so bring old blankets and towels.

Celebrate the Taste of Nablus SATURDAY, 11 A.M. - 4 P.M.

Festive occasions are often characterized by unique and delicious food. Join NCM to celebrate the Launch Zone’s newest showcase exploring Palestinian food and culture through images and narratives highlighting children in the city of Nablus. The celebration includes hands-on activities, food, and entertainment.

The program and exhibit are presented in partnership with Tomorrow’s Youth Organization (TYO), which provides enrichment programs to kids and families in Nablus. Through a small exhibit and hands-on exploration of a cultural discovery box, visitors will discover traditional Palestinian foods, what foods TYO students like, and express their own thoughts about food.

Dabkeh Dance Troupe SATURDAY, NOON, 1, & 2 P.M.

Dance along to high energy rhythms presented by the Arab Student Association’s Dabkeh Dance Troupe of George Mason University. Meaning "stamping of the feet" in Arabic, dabkeh is a traditional Arab folk dance. Performances include a dance with performers wearing traditional costumes, as well as interactive dance lessons for the whole family. Performers will also help visitors write their names in Arabic!

Taste of Nablus SATURDAY, 11 A.M. - 4 P.M.

Experience the Launch Zone’s newest showcase with edible treats and interactive fun. Explore Palestinian food and culture through images and narratives highlighting children in the city of Nablus. The program includes hands-on activities and food sampling.

The program and exhibit are presented in partnership with Tomorrow’s Youth Organization (TYO), which provides enrichment programs to kids and families in Nablus.
