DC Carnival Pics

This year, we actually made it to the DC Carnival festivities before it was over. A friend, who lives off the Georgia Avenue thoroughfare, the main parade route, invited us over to a barbecue. The kids could stay indoors, frolick and play and when we hear a band coming thru, we could jot up the the block take a peek, dance, take photos and go back to the party. Ideal right? Of course, only we go there late and missed 75% of the bands. It was a little too hectic, but I did appreciate it, especially when a passing rain cloud dumped bucket of water on the crowd for a brief moment. We were safe and dry indoors for most of that. It was a friendly reminder that these days in DC with all the humidity, you should never walk around without a portable umbrella somewhere on your person. Anyway, there are some wonderful pics of the Carnival on Ted Mebanes' webpage.

Here are a few of my crappy pics.

what a crowd eh? it gets bigger and bigger every year.
me and GG on the road
i see "mud people"...the "mud" band is the most popular among the young
we managed to catch the pan bands which are usually bringing up the rear
DC Carnival is notorious for ending promptly and this year earlier than usual at 3pm, evidenced by the clean up truck and police enforcing the prompt clean up of the road. this guy stopped by the cookout and sung us a wonderful medley of Commodore and other 70s hits. He had an awesome voice and at one time, we were all jamming to the hits with him. What a sight to see! He sold some cds. Got a few tips. Left and came back for an Encore! "Only on Georgia Avenue" our host exclaimed.
