Tonight We Fly Over the World

One of the fun things Caleb loves to do when he sees me working on my blog is asks me to scroll to the bottom.

There, he finds my neoworx map which documents all my visitors from around the world. Once we click on the map, we can fly over the different continents, countries, oceans and seas. Through this fun exercise, Caleb, has learned a great deal about geography. He knows where Africa, Trinidad and United States are relative to one another. One day, I had a visitor from India, France and California at the same time and we talked about the cultures and differences of each locale. It is a great learning tool indeed.

Before I put that application on, we used to go to Goolge Earth and fly to my parent's home in Sierra Leone and to Dave's childhood block in San Fernando, Trinidad.

For those who don't know, Google has taken satellite images and actual photographs from various sources and uploaded them on the w
orld map.

If you t
ype in a specific address or locale, it will fly over the earth and hover over the location. You can then zoom in on a specific street or house even. Talk about Big Brother watching you. (1984? remember the Will Smith movie "Enemy of the State"). We even saw Dave's dad's car in the carport and the House and everything. I've gone to see the upgrades they've done to my childhood school in DC since a fire incident. I've flown over Tomkat's Beverly Hills home and saw someone sunbathing on a deck. What a creepy stalker tool.

It's also wonderful teaching tool also and an excellent opportunity to googlesightsee places you've never been before or would like to someday visit.

We're going to buy him a GLOBE this Sunday so he can have a real in life version of my virtual world.

cute. isn't it fascinating watching them? their wonder and excitement to learn? my eldest was totally into maps, also maps of the solar system for a while, he used to know every planet and things about them when he was younger.

you are soooo right. It is one of the most WONDERFUL things about raising children. That "wonderment". Makes all the other craziness worth it.

It's awesome that you take advantage of these teaching moments. Ethan got a globe lamp for Christmas and every few nights we talk about someplace different. Plus he likes to spin it! I guess we can't be all educational all the time.

If Caleb likes stickers, you might want to check out our Sticker Atlas of the World. It's Internet-referenced so it refers you to related Web sites as well. Also, our Children's World Atlas is a good book to check out.

sponges, saucy! yes. I am amazed every single day by the depth and scope of their knowledge base at 5 years old. it really is a sociology experiment that explains a whole lot when it comes to IQ and class and exposure etc. interesting.
